Peri-menopausal? 3 reasons we should all embrace it

Menopause must be one of the most unsexy words in the English language, but as unsexy as it sounds there is a flipside fortunately… read on to find out why.

Most of us connect Menopause with suffering; a longer form of PMT, and in many ways this is unfortunately true.  Strangely though, we are not taught much about this important stage in our life and many of us are well into the throes of it before we start to ask questions, and learn the hard way (usually via Dr Google).

So why does no one talk about it?

In my generation we are used to everything being in the open, but it wasn’t so long ago that women’s cycles were taboo and not discussed openly. Women were taught to suffer everything from PMT to childbirth in silence – thankfully that is no longer the case and there is plenty of information around to help us through this critical period of our lives.

So whilst it may be tumultuous (like all good rebirthing exercises) there is certainly light at the end of the tunnel; in fact it may even be better than before!

Below are 3 good reasons to embrace the Big M;

  1. After menopause we enter our ”power” stage, the “Queen” or “Matriarch” period of our lives. We’ve usually shed our old skin by now and we feel 100% comfortable in our new skin. In our Queen stage we know our strengths and weaknesses, and are equally comfortable and accepting of both. We are the Leader and Director of our lives and the fruits of our labour (be that children, life’s work, or our passion projects) are bountiful and we may be blessed to have a harvest we can share. We are discernible with our time and choice of company – we’ve fully embraced the ”no” word and use it regularly. There is a realisation of our successes as well as failures in life and no need to shy away from either. We are truly wise, beautiful, competent and resourceful; powerful beyond measure!
  2. Our libido will return with GUSTO! Margaret Mead, a 20th century anthropologist wrote about a ”post-menopausal zest”, or a resurgence of energy that follows the hormonal shifts that signify menopause (predominantly estrogen and progesterone). Many women on the other side claim to be more sexually confident, fully in touch with their pleasure and not afraid to express their femininity and sexuality. We are our own version of a sex symbol and very much out and proud!
  3. We can increase our estrogen levels again through meditation!  Many women lament their loss of estrogen after menopause, but there is new research showing that meditation can indeed increase our estrogen naturally. This may not be the entire solution for all women, but how empowering to know there is a natural solution that is so incredibly good for us in so many ways!

If you are experiencing symptoms such as irritability, anger, bloating, weight gain, breast tenderness or low libido in unusually large bouts, you may be peri-menopausal (typically women between 45-55 but may be as early as 35). There is a lot we can do through diet and lifestyle, as well as supplements to help your journey through this time so please reach out to me if you would like to book a consultation here
