Make Everyday Feel Like A Holiday
For many of us meditation is something that we just do, or think we ‘should’ do. For many others it’s something that continually falls off the ‘to do’ list, the victim of a busy and full lifestyle…
For many years I was one of those people. When I started meditating I couldn’t feel, and certainly couldn’t see any difference… so if there was an opportunity to excuse myself I’d often take it.
I also let my body tell me when it was time to get up off my meditation cushion and start the days routine. The first sign of back ache, or a numb foot would be enough for me to blow out the candle and put away my props. But what I didn’t realise was that this was the body’s way of keeping me grounded in the KNOWN.
So what’s wrong with that I hear you ask?
When we follow the same routine day in, day out without opening the doorway to possibilities, we will always be where we are now. It smacks slightly like the definition of insanity doesn’t it? ..do what we’ve always done and we’ll get what we’ve always got… ??
The KNOWN is a great place when life is good, but what about when the wheel of fortune inevitably heads south? What then? It’s those moments in life (and they come to all of us) that we need to have the skill set to be able to move into the realm of POSSIBILITY.
I recently had the pleasure of attending one of Dr. Joe Dispenza’s workshops here in Sydney. For those of that haven’t heard of Dr. Joe, he’s a Neuroscience specialist that taught himself to recover from a car accident that had left him 6 broken vertebrae. Medical specialists at the time said he would never walk again. Joe disagreed. He focused on philosophical inner healing and eventually had a full recovery. He now travels around the world teaching the art of meditation and how to unlock the full potential of the brain.
It was in this workshop that I experienced my first real transformation from meditation. Firstly, as I sat in Dr. Joe’s guided meditation in a conference with 5000 people I felt a long term shoulder injury that was causing me ongoing discomfort simply melt away. The second transformation came the next day and the next, and the next…
I found I was looking forward to getting out of bed to meditate!
Yes, even during winter….
Then, I found the more I meditated, the more I wanted to meditate. I suddenly found myself trying to squeeze in extra moments of meditation and mindfulness throughout the day – 5 minutes here and there – in the toilet, standing at traffic lights, waiting for a coffee…. ALL opportunities to sneak a few extra mindful moments….
But the real wake-up came from being able to separate myself from my surroundings. To allow stressful moments wash over me, to still be happy inside when the weather was miserable, to not react to the person that knows how to push all your buttons, to be happy regardless of what was going on in the external environment… I was FREE because I’d spent the time on the meditation cushion opening myself to POSSIBILITIES. For when we are truly connected on the inside, we are more open to connecting with the flow of the universe. If that sounds a little hippy woo-woo for you, then think about a time when everything just flowed well in your life… chances are you were connected to the divine energy of the universe. When we step out of that energy we hit brick walls, dead ends and endless frustration.
Amongst the many benefits of meditation (too many to go into in this blog) is that we ‘fire and wire’ new connections in our brain – we break the old patterns of thinking / believing and make way for new beginnings (new connections) and new ways of being. Essentially, we make way for the kind of lives we always dreamed of. It’s a process of constant unlearning and relearning, and training the mind and body that they’re not in control of us. The higher mind, the part that can observe everything, will break the cycle and free us from suffering. And all we have to do is meditate!
In Joe’s own words, ‘meditate everyday until you’re in love with life and you’ll teach your body what the future could feel like!’
